Coastguard teams stuck in the mud for important rescue exercise

Members of emergency services have been stuck in the mud today as part of an important training exercise at a mud rescue hotspot.

Following a spate of rescue missions at Crosby Beach already this year, HM Coastguard, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and local RNLI lifeboat and lifeguard teams have joined forces for mud rescue training, to demonstrate what each service can do and how they can work together to ensure a successful response.

These exercises are a chance for the teams to experience these types of incidents first-hand, in locations where mud rescue incidents are common.

Earlier this month the Coastguard rescued nine people from the Crosby Beach mud across just two days.

Merseyside Coastal Operations Area Commander Mike Buratti said:

It isn’t uncommon for coastal walkers to get stuck in the mud here, it’s very easy to get caught out, so these exercises make sure we are constantly prepared.

These multi-agency exercises also help us gain a better understanding of the locations we’re frequently called out to, and what each service can provide.

“During these exercises one of us actually does get stuck in the mud so we can experience what it is like and understand what to do and what not to do, while in a controlled environment.”

HM Coastguard is urging the public to always be prepared when heading to the coast.

Mike added: “Everyone needs to be careful while enjoying a day out at the coastline, there are many dangers. Getting stuck in the mud is a horrendous situation to be in and there are ways it can be avoided - check the weather, check the tide times and always look at local safety signage.

“We are always ready to respond to incidents but it is just as important to be prepared in the first place.”
