Action! Second series of Maritime and Coastguard Agency documentary

The cameras are back for the return of the nailbiting Channel 5 TV series, Coastguard. 

After more than 5-million people tuned in to watch the first series of the fly-on-the-wall documentary about the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, a second outing has been commissioned. 

Film crews will be working over the coming months to capture the dramatic challenges facing the teams who keep people safe at sea and along our coast: from Coastguard Rescue Teams, maritime rescue coordination centres and helicopter crews to marine surveyors and investigations teams. 

The six-part Series 2 is scheduled to air next year.

Series 1: Episode 1
In the first episode, we follow Senior Investigator Mark as he is alerted to an incident on the River Mersey where a crew member of a tug boat has sadly died. Meanwhile, in Shetland, a Mayday call is picked up from a sinking fishing vessel and on the south coast in Dorset, our Coastguard Rescue Teams and a Coastguard helicopter are sent to an elderly man who finds himself in serious danger after getting stuck in the mud. The fixed wing aircraft spots a fisherman putting himself in danger, much to the dismay of the vessel’s skipper.

Series 1: Episode 2
In the second episode, we follow the MCA investigation into a speedboat incident on the Isles of Scilly. Meanwhile, the Coastguard helicopter crew from Caernarfon take a call about an 8-year-old child suffering from appendicitis on Wales’ highest mountain, while the Inverness crew are looking for a walker who has taken a fall in the Scottish mountains. We also see the Newquay crew tasked to a French Yacht in serious trouble in the English Channel with eight people on board, as well as the chance to watch a vessel inspection, from the eyes of a principal surveyor.

Series 1: Episode 3
In the third episode, time is of the essence with a kite surfer pulled out to sea, a woman cut off by the tide and an injured climber stuck on the cliff edge. We see teams rush to help before disaster strikes and are given a view of a rescue from the operations centre as well as on the ground. We will also learn more about our Counter Pollution team and their work, as well as more from our Survey and Inspection Team.

Series 1: Episode 4
In the fourth episode, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) receive a distress alert from a rowing boat in the middle of the Atlantic, eight days from shore and out of range of search and rescue helicopters. Teams are called to assist a woman who has fallen off a sea wall and we see a rescue from a yacht, as HM Coastguard winch paramedic has just minutes to act before the vessel disintegrates.

Series 1: Episode 5
Episode five of Coastguard, the observational documentary following the inner workings of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, will begin with dramatic rescue footage as HM Coastguard receive a Mayday call from a vessel reportedly sinking, and fast. Meanwhile, safety checks over UK waters continue to encourage safe working practices at sea and MCA surveyors will re-inspect a detained vessel in Teesport to see if safety concerns have been addressed. The operations room at the JRCC receives a 999 call from a passer-by who can hear someone screaming for help while the Prestwick helicopter responds to a call for help despite worsening weather, with lightning, heavy rain and poor visibility…

Series 1: Episode 6
In the sixth – and final – episode of series one, we will follow the rescue of a five people from an around the UK rowing boat challenge which has gone goes disastrously wrong, as they inch ever closer to an area of treacherous rocks. Over on the West coast of Wales, MCA surveyors are making an unannounced visit to two previously inspected fishing vessels and, at the iconic Seven Sisters cliffs, a family’s sightseeing holiday turns into a fight for survival. Meanwhile on the south coast, we will watch a Coastguard Rescue Team use their skills to help paramedics extract an injured crewman in severe pain from an awkward part of a commercial shipping vessel...
