James Mathieson spotted a man in trouble in the sea off Imperial Ledge, Torquay on June 27th last year. James, 16, jumped into the sea, swam to the man and rolled him onto his back, before swimming him to a nearby rock ledge where he was pulled from the sea.
He continued to provide first aid and assist coastguard rescue officers until a coastguard helicopter airlifted him to hospital. Drew Parkinson, Coastal Operations Area Commander, today presented James with a Royal Humane Society Certificate in recognition of his act of bravery.
Drew said: āJames acted at great personal risk to himself. His gallant actions undoubtedly saved a manās life.ā āIf you see someone in trouble on the coast or at sea donāt hesitate to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.ā
