Swimmer's Boxing Day rescue in Cornwall

While many celebrate the festive period with family and friends, our staff and volunteers continue to be ready to respond 24/7, including on Boxing Day.
HM Coastguard

HM Coastguard received a 999 call at 16:40 yesterday (26th Dec) from a woman who had been swimming off Trebarwith Strand, Tintagel. When she got out of the water she found herself completely cut off on the rocks with no way back to safety.

Polzeath and Boscastle coastguard rescue teams, RNLI lifeboats from Port Isaac and Padstow and a coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Newquay were all sent. The helicopter winched the woman to the top of the cliff where she was checked over, and was able to make her own way home.

Paddy Corcoran, HM Coastguard said: "The swimmer, who was visiting the area, did exactly the right thing by calling for help and not getting herself into more difficulty.

"If you’re going to the coast, no matter what you’re doing, please always check the weather and tide times before you head out. When you arrive make sure you know where, when and how you can leave the area safely. Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back, and always take an appropriate means of communication to call for help if the worst should happen.

"We really do have such a beautiful coastline, but it can be dangerous, we want everyone to enjoy it, but please be aware of what could happen and prepare accordingly.

"Remember, in an emergency at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
